6、Teaching diaries6. Process reports1. Introduction The most basic educational skill is reading. The most basic obligation of any school is to teach reading-President George W. Bush. Reading is an important element in English learning. However, many students are not good at it. They often get half the

7、 result with twice the effort. Now let us discuss it and explore the ways of improving reading skills. I hope I can solve the problems that have troubled me for some time through the action research so that I can apply my knowledge and theory into practice, which I learned from Chaohu TV University.

Summary of the Preliminary ResearchThis part of my study was conducted during Sep8, 2021-Oct.5, 2021.2.1 ProblemThe problem I have in my teaching and the students referred is that most of the students cant do well in English reading. They dont know how to read well.2.2 Problem analysisIn my teach

9、ing, the problem identified was really a serious problem. My preliminary research confirmed that there are three main reasons why students cant do the reading well. First, some of my students didnt feel interested in reading. Secondly, students are lack of reading. Most students have felt overloaded

10、 because of heavier homework assignments, so they dont have much time to do reading practice. Thirdly, many students are lack of reading skills. These problems have been troubling me for a long time and now I determine to find a solution to the problem.2.2.1 Analytic methodThrough careful analysis,

11、I was led to some questions. For instance, I found many of my students are very poor in English reading, and I wanted to know why it should be the case and whether they thought it was important and necessary to practice English reading or not? If they thought it was important and necessary, the prob

12、lem was actually caused by myself, not by my students. Probably I didnt emphasize the skills of English reading., or maybe the skills of doing reading practice I said were too little.2.2.2 Cause analysisIn this situation, I asked myself a series of questions and tried to provide some answers to them

13、. Why were many of my students so poor in English reading.? In order to know more about this issue, I designed a cause exploration procedure like this:Questions AnswersIs it because they do not like reading practice? NoIs it because they are not motivated? Do we read in the classroom for the same reasons as we do in the real world? We usually have a purpose in reading: there is something we want to find out, some i

15、nformation we want to check or clarity, some opinions we want to match against our own, etc. We also have a purpose in reading when we read stories for pleas ure: we want to find out how the story develops, what happens next. (Doff, 198, p.170) If your students have no need to use the foreign langua

16、ge outside the classroom, then the only function of the foreign language for them seems to be: to be learnt. Si milarly the only reason for reading it is: to learn to read it. (Nuttall, 1982, p.3) Students therefore need to be made aware that there is not just one way of reading, there are several according to different purposes. That is why they need to practice diffe
